The City of Norfolk, NRHA and Brinshore Development seek community input for redeveloped section of St. Paul’s area.

NORFOLK, VA (July 25, 2022) – The City of Norfolk, Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) and Brinshore Development seek input from residents and community leaders to name the newly transformed community currently known as Tidewater Gardens.

Interested parties are asked to fill out an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/TidewaterGardensName. Printed copies of the survey are also available at four area locations: Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority, 555 E. Main Street, The Basilica of Saint Mary, 232 Chapel Street, City of Norfolk City Hall, 810 Union Street and People First Office, 521 Ruffner Street. Additionally, postcards with a QR code that will lead directly to the online survey will be mailed to Tidewater Gardens, Young Terrace, and Calvert Square residents.

“We have spent the last several years listening to the residents, community leaders, and stakeholders of St. Paul’s to get their input on this transformational project,” said Norfolk Mayor Dr. Kenneth Cooper Alexander. “As development of the first phase moves forward, we are excited to work with the community once again in selecting a new name for the St. Paul’s Tidewater Gardens area that celebrates its past and future.”

“NRHA remains committed to working with residents and the broader community in the transformation of the Tidewater Gardens community. Through our development partner we seek resident input in establishing a new name and unified identity,” stated NRHA Executive Director Ron Jackson.

The first phase of the redevelopment project is currently referred to as “Blocks 19 and 20.” Block 19, a 72-unit senior living apartment building, will offer a variety of one and two-bedroom units. Amenities in the development include fitness center, computer lab, community room, classrooms for service providers, conference room, along with on-site management and parking.

Block 20 will provide a 120-unit family development with one, two and three-bedroom apartments in addition to 3,600 square feet of indoor community and amenity space, outdoor gathering area, playground, and on-site parking. Retail space along a realigned Church Street is included and will deliver commercial storefront location opportunities for rent by neighborhood and community serving groups.

“It’s a privilege for us to enhance Norfolk with this type of mixed-use redevelopment,” said Richard Sciortino, principal at Brinshore Development. “We encourage all residents to provide us their feedback and look forward to this area receiving a name that is symbolic to the faith, strength and fellowship of the St. Paul’s Tidewater Gardens neighborhood.”

Charlotte-based marketing firm Yellow Duck Marketing is managing the naming project.

The survey will be available through Sunday, August 7.

The redeveloped community is scheduled for completion by 2025.
